Winter 2023-34 Buoy Plans

Submitted by Kim on 12/07/2023

While CBIBS buoys are fairly sturdy, ice can damage sensors and large ice floes can move buoys far from their deployed locations. To keep CBIBS buoy safe over the winter, the team is pulling the Patapsco buoy. This is our northernmost buoy, and it is the most vulnerable to freezing. Our team is pulling it the week of December 4; it will return in late winter/early spring once the waters warm again.

We do plan on leaving all other buoys in the water, but will monitor conditions and forecasts in case we need to pull others as well.
