Update: Upper Potomac, Susquehanna, and Patapsco Buoys Pulled for Winter

Submitted by admin on 12/17/2013

The CBIBS Upper Potomac and Susquehanna buoys have been pulled for the winter. This is done each each in preparation for winter, as ice can damage the buoys' in-water sensors, and large ice floes can move buoys and their moorings. The Upper Potomac and Susquehanna buoys are in locations particularly susceptible to icing because they are farther north and in fresher water than most other buoys.

In early January, the Patapsco buoy was also pulled due to damage from ice.

The NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office's CBIBS field team will monitor water temperatures and water freezing points at all other buoy locations; if the threat of ice becomes high, other buoys may be pulled as well. We'll keep you posted!
